Demeter (Greek), (Roman equivalent is Ceres)

Demeter is the Greek goddess of corn, grain, and the harvest.  It was believed that she made the crops grow each year. To thank her for the harvest, the first loaf of bread was offered to her.  She is also the goddess of fertility, the earth and agriculture as well as the changing seasons. In her grief over the loss of her daughter, Persephone (who was stolen by Hades into the Underworld) she stopped doing her job, which was to make the plants grow. Eventually Persephone returns for 1/2 of the year, hence the seasons. The Greek tale of Demeter, Persephone and Hades can be found here:
